Fall Term 2015
Each year as the winter semester draws to a close, the members of the Last Alliance like to enjoy an evening of eating good food, enjoying great company, and reading Tolkien’s Father Christmas Letters. The location of this meeting is as of yet TBA, however the date will be the evening of December 5 (that’s a Saturday), likely starting around 5PM or 6PM. This is a potluck event as well, so plan on bringing some food for everyone to share! Follow this page for updates as they are confirmed!
Every semester we hold and end of term Evening of Sub-creation! It’s a very fun event with friends, pizza, costumes, and talent sharing! We like to give everyone in the club a chance to show everyone their talents and hobbies. In the past we’ve had musical numbers, theatre pieces, academic presentations, writing excerpts, embroidery, knitting, and quilting displays, game shows, Warhammer displays, cake decorating, and much more! Tolkien-related performances are always excellent but definitely not mandatory – any act of sub-creation is welcome! If you would like to participate please let us know so we can put you on the program! The event is on Friday, November 27 at 6PM.

We usually sign up as a group in groups of 4 or 5. If you are interested, please email us or sign up at book study! Please sign up by next Monday if you’re interested!

Are you headed to the Edmonton Expo this year? If you are, be sure to check out our panel, entitled The Roles of Women in the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien. It will take place on Saturday September 26, at 4:30PM in Room 104. The panel will feature some Istari members holding a discussion of the portrayal of female characters in Tolkien’s various works. It does require you have a pass to the Saturday portion of the expo, which can be a bit pricey – however, if you were planning on being at the expo anyway, be sure to come check us out!
“There are few female characters in Tolkien’s major works – but does that diminish their strength of character and impact on the story? A frank discussion on women’s roles in both the books and films.”
This is an overnight event, which will be held this year on Saturday, Sept 19 to Sunday, Sept 20. It consists of a short hike just outside with Edmonton and a night of sleeping under the stars, just like the companions in the Fellowship. As well, there is usually food, reading of the upcoming week’s book study chapters, and other games and activities along the way. We also use it as an opportunity to raise money for the Centre for Family Literacy! More details are available at www.lastallianceuofa.com/hobbithike!
Welcome Party: September 11
The Last Alliance will be holding a welcome (back) party on September 11’th from 4-7PM in the Heritage Lounge of Athabasca Hall. This is an informal get-together where you will be able to meet the executives and fellow members and prospective members in a more casual setting.
There will be snacks and ice-breaker games, but there will also be lots of time devoted to mingling and getting to know one another.
