Fall Term 2016
Welcome Party: September 9th
The Last Alliance will be holding a welcome party Sept. 9th from 4:30-7:30 PM in the Heritage Lounge of Athabasca Hall. This is an informal get-together where you will be able to meet the executives and fellow members and prospective members in a more casual setting.
There will be snacks and ice-breaker games, but there will also be lots of time devoted to mingling and getting to know one another. Drop by any time between 4:00 and 7:00 to say hello, reconnect with old friends after the break, and make new friends at the start of a new term!
Edmonton Expo: September 23rd-25th
The Last alliance will be presenting a panel at the Expo: Friday, September 23 at 4 pm. This year’s topic is Heroism in Tolkien. Want to see more Tolkien panels? Last year’s President, Alex Thompson, is putting on a panel to do with the Silmarillion just after ours at 4:45. We hope to see you guys out there! Come armed with awesome questions!
Hobbit Hike: October 1st-2nd
Yes, it is once again that glorious time of the year. The time where we all gather for the annual Hobbit Hike. Come join us for food, a small Hobbit walking party, games and time to read that weeks chapters together! We hope to see a lot of people out there, cheer guaranteed.
This year we will be camping at Elk Island National Park from noon October 1 to noon October 2. We provide supper and breakfast but not lunch on either day. Waivers can be signed right up to when we get to the campsite. Note: these waivers may only be witnessed by Sofia, Brynn, or Corinne. Keep an eye on Facebook or email one of the Istari about carpools and packing lists.
Knife in the Dark Murder Mystery: October 14th
It is indeed back my friends! We shall once more gather together in the collective hope of finding which of us is a dastardly criminal! Join us on Friday October 14, for murderer is loose in the Shire and we must stop the fiend. We start at 5 pm, bring $5 for pizza. Note: this is an RSVP event. RSVP to the Facebook event no later than October 9 so we can assign you a character.
Trick or trEAT: October 31st
Once again we seek to team up with the Campus Food Bank and help eradicate hunger on campus. We join up in teams of max. 5 members (we are allowed more than one team) and go trick or treating for non-perishable food items on Halloween night. To sign up, check out our Facebook event on the Last Alliance page or email Brynn or Sofia. Pro-tip, sometimes we also get candy, hide that of the food bank will also take it (as you will often hear Rick Grumble about).
Riddles in the Dark Trivia Night: November 18th
From deep in the tunnels of the Misty Mountains has come a long-forgotten event into the light of day: the Riddles in the Dark Trivia Night. Hosted by Rick, it is a Family Feud style Trivia game centred around, you guessed it , The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit (maybe even some Silmarillion if Rick is feeling tricksy). So brush up on your factoids of Middle-earth and bring your A-Game on Friday November 18 at 6 pm in Athabasca Hall. (psst, there might even be prizes).
Year-End Party: December 2nd
Every semester we hold and end of term Evening of Sub-creation! It’s a very fun event with friends, pizza, costumes, and talent sharing! We like to give everyone in the club a chance to show everyone their talents and hobbies. In the past we’ve had musical numbers, theatre pieces, academic presentations, writing excerpts, embroidery, knitting, and quilting displays, game shows, Warhammer displays, cake decorating, and much more! Tolkien-related performances are always excellent but definitely not mandatory – any act of sub-creation is welcome! If you would like to participate please let us know so we can put you on the program! The event is on Friday, December 2nd at 6PM.
